After the year we’ve all experienced, many of us are being more intentional with where we are spending our money. Supporting local businesses who share our values. One business near your apartment in DC that we should all support is Mahogany Books. This local shop was started as an online bookstore back in 2007 to share literature relating to the African Diaspora. They grew so much they decided to open a physical location in D.C. and have been open since! In 2019 they were voted one of the Top 100 Minority Business Enterprises in the D.C. area which was much deserved.
They are a go-to for those searching for a great read in D.C. and you can shop online or visit the store, whatever strikes your fancy. They have best sellers, lesser-known classics, children’s books, and one of the largest inventories of Black books online—which is something they strive to grow more each year. The owners, Derrick and Ramunda Young, aim to serve the community and give back to the youth through free book donations, events, and reading programs. Not only can you get a good read, but you can also feel good about who you’re supporting and their mission.
