Teenage friends Krystin, Jaleesa, and Amber form the foundation for the original play She a Gem at the Kennedy Center. The story begins when this trio decides to compete in a double dutch contest at their neighborhood block party. They want to win—the grand prize is a fortune reading with local psychic Ms. Mary.
The girls are all excited to learn where their lives will lead, maybe to fame and fortune, or perhaps to a role as a “gem,” a community leader who looks out for the neighborhood. So they get down to practicing. Before long, they’re interrupted by a pregnant girl from nearby North Philly. She comes equipped with impressive double dutch skills, so they invite her to join the team. As they get to know their new friend, they learn more of her poignant story, and it surprise them. You can see She a Gem now through February 24th, and tickets are $20.
